Coal Hewer, was an official occupation introduced for the 1901 census and was intended to be used universally in the census for any miner who was employed cutting coal below ground.

You often see the term Miner crossed out and replaced by hewer. This was done by the enumerators supervisor who had to ensure that the required standards of consistency were maintained.

The reason this was introduced was because the government wished to record totals for each type of employment, and to do this required a standard set of employment terms.

It should be 'Coal Hewer', a coal miner - persons that hew or cut the coal from its natural situation.

Please see 1901 Wales census entry for Hiram Hale, West Dean, Gloucestershire with several male children who are also Coal 'Lewer's?? Googled this term but can't find anything - am I reading it wrong - should I assume Miner??

Also - child called Neylous??? Is this right?

Thanks,

Kate
