Many thanks for searching for me. I thought when I found the name on the birth certificate it would be easy to follow the line back. How wrong can you be? LOL

I've just looked up Kingsley.

I looked for anyone born around 1847-1851 there to see what the reg district might be. Samuel Adams (name picked at random) was still living there - registration district Cheadle and sub-dist Alton (the Alton Towers area).

I also looked for it on Multimap - and found three. One is east of Stoke on Trent, just north of Cheadle and just east of Hulme - sounds like plenty of opportunity to confuse towns! Multimap has Cheadle in Staffs at postcodes ST10 and Cheadle in Cheshire (Manchester outskirts) at SK8.

I have followed this family from 1861 (with Lewis Billings) forward and back through the census but cannot find a reference to the mother of Alice (she is shown as a niece here) or anything to tie them to the Pope family

There is this little girl in 1861:

Does the birth cert refer to the mother as Alice Billings? Or as Alice Pope, formerly Billings?

The eldest two children seems to have been born in Manchester, have you checked www.lancashirebmd.org.uk?

Hello everyone
I have my grandfathers (Albert Pope 26/9/1900) birth certificate his father was Thomas Pope and his mother Alice Billings. I have the family on the census returns in Hanley, Staffordshire and Alice seems to have been born in Cheadle in about 1852 - then I get stuck can't find their marriage, can't find her birth, any help would be greatly appreciated. The first child was born in about 1874 so I guess the marriage should be around then sometime.
