Have just started to use the boards in earnest and am baffled by some of the terms that are used. I am sure that those of you that have been around for ages will know what it all means and will have been asked the same old questions over and over. I would be very grateful if you could let me know what some of it means.

Ok :)

IGI (International Genealogical Index) is the name used by the familysearch (mormon) site for mostly pre registration (pre 1837) events - births, marriages and deaths (bmd). It is free to use, but take all the "submitted" entries with some caution as they are added by people like you and me who believe they have the right people and dates. The extracted entries are taken from parish records and can generally be trusted but they do have errors. Not all counties handed over their info to the mormons, so not all records are on there. You can access the IGI and the 1881 census free on the mormons site at familysearch.org

For post registration (certificates) 1837 events, use freebmd to find a reference and then buy a certificate to gain further information for £7 from gro online (never pay more, there are some scam sites with similar names)

Stickies - are threads which are posted and "stuck" to the same position at the head of a board, so that they are there for everyone to see, rather than like this thread, which will move down the board and eventually disappear from site. It is for reference materials.

To bookmark click on the "My Bookmarks" link on the left of this page.

I will nudge (this means add anything to a thread as a new posting - even a full stop will do - to lift a thread to the top of the board) the Tips for Newbies thread up for you.
