Bishops Transcripts

I have been using the Durham Parish Records online, but they are Bishops Transcripts. Does this mean a Bishop (?) has copied the actual registers, or are these copies of the actual registers? |

The Bishops Transcripts were copies from parish records that were returned yearly to the bishop & transcribed. The original parish records usually contain more info. |

The clergy were aware that the parish registers could be destroyed (lightning was particularly hazardous for churches) and required the churches to transcribe records and send these transcripts to the diocese. These are referred to as the bishop's transcripts. They may not have as much detail as the original parish registers. |
