1851 Look Up Please - Musgrave

Hi

Just wondering if anyone would do a census look up for me please? Probably a bad time to ask being Easter but just tidying my file and realised I could do with an 1851 Census to clear something up for me. Mary Jane Musgrave (1844) from Leeds was my grandad's grandma. She took over the Anchor Inn, Meynell Street, Holbeck, Leeds when her father William retired.

I have an 1861 Census listing William Musgrave as a Widower, Address 11 Meynell Street, Leeds.

William 41 Widower Beer House Keeper Born Holbeck
Mary Jane 17 Fathers Housekeeper Holbeck
Anne 9 Holbeck

I then have an 1871 Census listing the family living at the Anchor Inn, Meynell Street but now with a wife - Mary - 48 in 1871.

We think Mary Jane's mother was another Mary - Mary Handley. Married William Musgrave 1843. Therefore the 1851 Census would be useful in possibly confirming Mary Jane's mothers name as Mary. I wonder if the 1861 statement of Widower was right and he married another Mary OR whether it was wrong and it was the same Mary?

If this helps I think William Musgrave was an Overlooker before loosing an arm and having a second career as an innkeeper!

Thankyou for your time, Victoria.

Hi Victoria

I have looked for all the Musgraves and drawn a blank. Could they be elsewhere?

Hm - interesting!

I don't think they would be anywhere other than Leeds. They may be living more in the Woodhouse area as this is where we think William and Mary Handley were married.

On Mary Jane's birth certificate (1843) her mother is definitely listed as Mary Handley. I'm now wondering if the family living at Meynell Street are not the same ones as our Musgrave's who later owned the Anchor Inn, Meynell Street. I'm even more confused now!! How common is it for families to be missing from census's?

Any more advice on this would be fantastic! Sorry it's not straightforward!

Thanks again, Victoria.

Hm - just gets more confusing doesn't it!!! Thanks for getting all that info.

So could this be what happened -

William marries Mary Handley 1843. They have Mary Jane together but Mary dies during childbirth to William Handley Musgrave in 1848.

William then remarries Elizabeth Fawcett in 1849. Becomes a Flax Spinner before 1851. Sometime around this time he looses an arm as an overlooker. Applies for a licence at the Anchor Inn, Meynell Street in 1853.

By 1861 Elizabeth has also died and he is again a Widower. He remarries another Mary and is living with her and the kids in 1871!!!

Could anyone help shed any more light on this please? Further deaths/ marriages etc? If this is what happened to William it seems he had quite a tragic life - no wonder he started to run his own pub - it all turned him to drink!!!

Thanks again everyone! Victoria.
