As he was in the Army its likely he was fighting in the first Boar War
for info:-
The First Boer War (1880–1881), also known as the "Transvaal War," was a relatively brief and small-scale conflict in which Boer settlers revolted against a British attempt to annex the Transvaal, and re-established an independent republic.

Hi Folks

I'm looking for Martin Gavin born at St Peter's, Athlone, Ireland between 1859 and 1861.

He married Elizabeth Waye in March 1879 in Plymouth Devon. His age was given as 21, and he was a Corporal in the 25th Regiment at Raglan Baracks, Devonport Plymouth. But I can't find him in the 1881 Census.

His wife Elizabeth and son James, can be found in Plymouth, living with her parents, but Martin isn't there.

The family appears in each subsequent Census, he became a Prison Warder at Dartmoor prison.
I'm Hoping that someone out there could offer me some advice as to how to find where he was in 1881.
Any help would would be greatly appreciated

Dennis
