There doesn't always need to be a familial link, could be a member of the same church, a friend, or a neighbour. Or could be brother in law's sister in law's sister. LOL. If there's no clue found could be that there is no clue. Have you looked at neighbours etc on the census or witnesses on marriage cert?

My family adopted a child and I later found out that the fathers were friends and her father was hung for theft.

It took a few years but I got there in the end

Hello Chris
We have records from the 1891 & 1901 census of my grt grandmother in 1891 she is the adopted daughter by 1901 just the daughter there is no mention of her being adopted. But in 1881 there's a relative who is in the household where she later become's adopted into. But i cannot find any link to the the family she's adopted to, i have spent 2 weeks following records to see if there is any any connection. but so far have found none.

I have a 'visitor' age 1 in one census who by the next was listed as 'adopted'. This a child born late 1800s in Battersea (then Surrey) and living with a family in rural Essex.

I have tried everything I can think of to link her to the family. Poor Law records, Birth certificate, Baptism record and her marriage certificate included, none of which helped.

It is possible that she is the illegitimate daughter of a son who had strayed down to Surrey and the mother was a determined soul who found his parents to raise the girl.......But I doubt I will ever never know for sure :)

I have been working on this lady my grt grandma for the past 2 weeks and the family that adopted her. I cannot for the life of me find any connection regarding family and the family that adopted her.

Adoption was not a legal procedure until the mid-1920's. before that, all arrangements were informal, and often merely a case of relatives taking in an orphaned (or,at least,motherless) child

Would someone who was adopted in the year above, carry on through life in there adopted name. I cannot find any trace of this person, after she had a child in 1907. No marriage or anything i do have her on the 1891 & 1901 census. Would someone be able to give me any idea's where to look next.
