I'm stuck.
Speaking to my aunt I was told (which was verfied by the 1901 census) that my grandmother had a sister who died very young. Her name was Mary L Slaughter and I have found her on the 1901 census in Brighton aged 1. The story I have been given is that one day my Grandmother came home from school one day only to be told that her sister had died and that she was lying in a coffin and my grandmother was said to have remarked that she was like a porcelain doll with golden ringlets. I can only presume that Mary died when my grandmother was of the age to make such a remark and she was born in 1905. I have searched the records (apart from Parish records) for both Birth and Death certificates but can find no trace ? am I going mad or will a trip to Brighton Registry Office hold the answer do you think ?? Help please much appreciated.

I wonder if this could have been her birth?

Thanks for the advice re Lewes. I didn't think they would be able to search with such little info I have...
I don't fancy digging up 12 Melbourne St......!! The story goes that she was unable to walk and the family who had servants etc were a very proud family. I have visions that perhaps she wasn't registered for both birth and death !

Have you looked through the complete images on Ancestry? My only other thought is that she was christened with a different name such as Miriam Lavinia (there is one born in Steyning in 1899) but known as Mary L. Just a thought

K - thanks... Ive tried that one too !!! unfortunately my tree is quite complicated in parts. You see my grandmother was a Slaughter and I married a Slaughter (different family) but our paths have crossed several times.... the one you speak of is from my husbands tree !!!

Could she have been adopted??
