When William married, what was shown as the occupation of Nicholas?
Did he sign as a witness?....Who did?

Maybe a witness name would help lead you to a particular family - a sibling perhaps?

Does the 1841 show any of them?

Yes, get the film of the parish records for both places and look through for the baptism of your William. It will give the 'abode' of the family. That might tell you which couple it is. You might also find the marriage earlier in the film, giving the maiden name of the woman.

Hi Joanna

Just re-reading through all of this info again as it's quite confusing (had my head in a spin with it all LOL).

Anyway, tell me if I'm wrong, but what it seems to boil down to (to me at least) is this:

Nicholas Parkin born 1795 Graizeland Lincs married Ann Stacey in 1815 in Beckingham.

The other Nicholas married in Walkeringham.

The family in Beckingham had several children born there - the IGI lists a Mary 1816 (which would tie in with their marriage date of 1815) and a John 1823. You also have a record of birth for a William born 1820 in Beckingham.

Therefore, it appears that your William was the son of this couple who were living in Beckingham. And, therefore, his father would be Nicholas born in Graizeland.

I think! Sometimes the truth just stares us in the face but we make it more complicated than it actually is.

To verify this I would suggest you find a way of checking the parish records for both Beckingham Notts and Walkeringham Notts. Hopefully, you might find that there are births registered for one family in Beckingham and some for the family in Walkeringham.

Although we can't be sure that the couple who married in Walkeringham actually remained living there - but it looks as though the other couple in Beckingham did stay there for many years after marrying.

Anyway, hope I haven't confused things all the more for you.

Regards - Athena

actually, i have gleaned that bit of information from a few other trees, and because the nicholas that was born in walkeringham was most likely the one married there. i have seen parish records from the marriage to ann stacey and it says they were both of this parish - but neither nicholas was at birth. one must have moved there.
i would agree about the one born in notts being the father if it weren't that the one born in lincs got married in the same town my william was born in. anyway, the lincs town is less than six miles from beckingham anyway.
parish records have a robert born in 1818 to nicholas and ann too. i just don't know if its the right nicholas! its so frustrating.
thanks for your help and suggestions.

Joanna

Most parish records for births only record the mother's first name, unfortunately.

I would say that the more likely candidate for his father would be the one listed in the NOTTS county, since that is the county Wm was born in.

Just checked the IGI and there are two more children born to Nicholas and Ann of Beckingham:

1. JOHN PARKIN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 02 FEB 1823 Beckingham, Nottingham, England

2. MARY PARKIN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 15 NOV 1816 Beckingham, Nottingham, England

Can I just ask - how do you know that Nicholas b1795 Lincs married Ann Stacey in Notts and not the other Nicholas from Notts? Does it actually say on the marriage entry that Ann Stacey married Nicholas from the Lincs parish?

I am searching the Durham parish records at the minute. The earliest ones I've found have the mothers maiden name (around 1805 -1818).
I've noticed though that the later ones do not (around 1840's).
You may be lucky.

did parish records - the type extracted for the IGI - have mothers maiden names in when they recorded a birth/ christening?
i will explain my dilemma - i know from a marriage certificate in 1839 that i am searching for a nicholas parkin (father of william getting married). william was born in beckingham, notts. i have found two nicholas parkins within a few miles of beckingham who both married a woman called ann. i have nicholas born 1795 graizelound lincs and nicholas born 1786 walkeringham notts. both these places are just 2- 6 miles from beckingham. nicholas (1795) married ann stacey in beckingham in 1815. nicholas (1786) married ann bellamy in walkeringham in 1817. how do i find which was my nicholas. william was born 1820 - too early for birth certs with mothers name on. the only other potential use is that one nicholas died before william was married and the marriage certificate does not say deceased - but they may not have done back then.
sorry this has been a bit long. any help appreciated, because i am at a total dead end if i can't find out which it was. (frustrating cos i know the parents of each nicholas too!)
thanks in advance,
joanna
