Passenger Lists in 1883

Does anyone know of passenger lists - probably from Liverpool - for 1883? Find My Past starts in 1890!
I have a reply to a letter sent from Toronto dated 3 Sep 1883 in which he refers to her letter received on 23rd last. I presume the voyage out was during August and either to America or Canada.
Although I have found subsequent visits by family through Ellis Island, they don't seem to have gone that route this time.
Can't find them on the American censuses either!
Very grateful for any help
Trina
