Has Anyone got access to the Melbourne Electoral registers I have an address where my Grandmothers Cousins lived at some point between 1900 and 1940 but I have been unable to trace from whose line they descend and therefore who emigratedI

I have a postcard from them to my Grandmother which is signed "Your Loving cousins Edwin & Martha", so I suspect they are Brother and sister but I do not know their surname or who their parents were.

The property address is clear 73 Oakbank Street, Newport, Victoria, Melbourne

Possibles surnames are Tonge , Thompson, Cookson, Mountain, Sutton,

Please can anyone help as I appear to be defeated

Thanks

John

Thanks For your posting, I have sent details to the ask librarian last week but they do not appear to offer to search archives for electoral registers. I get the impression it is more a general service and they merely point you in the directions of geneology societies etc.

I may be wrong, I certainly hope so Cheers John

Hi John, The (Aus) National Library (Canberra) should be more helpful. (most State Libraries are too!) ..Valerie (WA)

On the electoral rolls on Ancestry there's a Martha Thompson listed in Newport, Vic. Maybe someone with a world sub can check the image for you, to check the address...

Name Gender Electoral Year State District Subdistrict
Martha Thompson Female 1919 Victoria Melbourne Ports Newport
Martha Thompson Female 1924 Victoria Melbourne Ports Newport
Martha Thompson Female 1931 Victoria Melbourne Ports Newport
Martha Thompson Female 1936 Victoria Melbourne Ports Newport

No Edwin Thompson is listed in Newport, the closest I could find is this one (again, I don't have a world sub so unable to check the images):

Edwin Stanley Thompson Male 1914 Victoria Batman
Edwin Stanley Thompson Male 1919 Victoria Batman
Edwin Stanley Thompson Male 1931 Victoria Maribyrnong
Edwin Stanley Thompson Male 1936 Victoria Melbourne Ports Melbourne South

Cheers,
Richard

John there is a lady on Records who is looking things up for people in Australia. Look for the thread started by Cherilyn, she might be able to help.
