I have just received the marriage cert for an ancestor. I'd not been able to find her birth and she is listed on the census as born in Rome, as a British Subject. It was a bit of intrigue so I was eagerly waiting this cert. Her father is listed as Henry (something) Cook and his occupation is Jockey. Her mother on the 1881 is a widow so he must have been deceased at the wedding in 1888.

Does anyone have any ideas where I might be able to find some info on a Jockey? The middle name looks like it would be a wonderful help if only it was fully legible. It could say Salisare but I wouldn't bet on it. LOL

Tried the Jockey Club website but that doesn't look like much help.

Post the 1881 details if you need to find the family on earlier census

Their elder daughter was born in Holland in 1871 so it would be a fair guess that that is why I can't find them earlier. They obviously moved about a fair bit. I'm more looking for tips on how to find a Jockey, if anyone else has one in there tree etc.

Thanks.

(ETA - Have to go out now, but will check back this evening)

Glitter the family are on the 1881 census.

nudge. My lot were horse dealers and jockeys from Wales. We might have ancestors racing today, SS!

Margaret,

I had found the family in 1881, after finding out about the child born in Holland, but not really sure that I could find a birth for Henry 1865 or find him on a later census to help with going backwards through the census.

Sorry, I was struck down by a migraine of doom I was off the net until now and it's still not gone completely.

I didn't say that he was a racing jockey, just that he was a jockey. The site is interesting, but I've no evidence that they ever went to America.

I've found a possible birth for Henry. Henry J Cook 1866 Q2 Croydon Vol: 2a P: 173, going off the theory that the middle name might not be Terey, perhaps misheard by the enumerator? I may well get this cert when I've already got ones pertaining to direct ancestors.

I have looked through the overseas births and others have looked for me and not found Florence unless we've missed something somewhere.
