Thank you.
I think one of the problems was sending it to an email address that was not my main one. I had it resent to my main email address and it has worked fine following your advice

When I receive my email with the gedcom, I left click the mouse to download it.

It then asks do you want to open it or save it, I click save and then on desktop.

It will then show as an icon of a tree and will be the same size as the original.

I can then open it with my FTM.

This is where I have got to.
GR have sent me my tree as an attachment. it is about 30KB
I right click my mouse and save it as a .ged file.
It appears in my documents as that funny little icon with green triangles but it is now 0kb.!
I try and open it using Family Historian ( a GR recommended product) but it won't open.
Where am I going wrong please?
