Many thanks Germaine and Christine for your help much appreciated. I just need to work out which one of the visitors he was a servant to!!

Hi Elizabeth

The head of the house is Walter Francis Scott MD

and his occupation is (cut & pasted from the census to avoid typos!!)

Duke Of Buechugh & Meensberry Parny Counciftor Lord Lienterraut Of The Colintus Of Lodinburgh Stoxburgh

From what I had seen so far, most of these people seem to be servants. I will have a look to see if there is anyone interesting and report back!!

Hi Elizabeth

The only visitors at the house were:

Henry Dundas (described as visitor, no occupation given)

Chades (Charles?) Alexander Home is also a visitor. His occupation is: Lord Dionelas - Piers Son Lient General Visct Melville K C B Aring. There is also a stray 'His Grace' title floating around in the list - which may very well belong to Chades!

Your William and Ialaes Gudburg are the only 2 people described as visitors servants. So it looks like they may be accompanying Chades.

The Scotts are Peers. Walter is the Head and Charlotte Anne, his wife with her own title - Dachus Of Preehart Of Tueensberry. All of the other Scotts (except John who is a servant) and Jessie Matheson are their children, Their occupations are given as son / daughter of Peer Life must have been tough for them!!)

The census seems to be riddled with interest spelling, so good luck with the translation!

Thanks for all the further information have found that Bowhill House and Country Park is the Scottish Borders home of the Duke of Buccleuch & Queensberry. My William gave up being a servant by the 1871 census and was a publican until his death! Many thanks again Elizabeth

The accompanying info begins to unravel the spelling nightmare from the census!
