Hi

I have found the 1851 census for Sarah Burden (my 4xgrandmother) details are as follows:

Unreadable road name:
Wm Burden / Head / Mar / 64 / Unreadable job / Wiltshire Potterne
Sarah Burden / Wife / Mar / 62 / Middx (meaning Middlesex as there is a ditto mark underneath for their son who was bornin Stepney)
Wm Burden / Son / Un / 19 / Cooper Apprentice / " Stepney.

I can't read the name of the road, job description for father William, and also place name in Middlesex for birthplace of Sarah.

Does anyone have access to the 1851 census to help me transcribe?

Many thanks for all your help.
Kind regards
Angela

I think the address is 9 Batty Street. (If you look at the description of the enumeration district Batty Street is mentioned).

Sarah's birthplace looks like Farnham.

I can't make out William's occupation.

This is how I read it:
1851 census
9 Batty St., St. Ggeorge, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex
Wm Burden, head, 64, (occupation looks like coop, short for cooper?), born Wiltshire Pottern
Sarah, wife, 62, born Middlesex Tunanham?
Wm., son, 19, cooper's apprentice, born Middlesex Stepney

I agree re the occupation being coop possibly short for cooper - with his son maybe being his apprentice

the son is a cooper in 1861
William Burden Harriett abt 1832 Stepney, Middlesex, England Head Stepney, Middlesex

As I don't know a Farnham or Tunanham in Middlesex/London, my guess would be Tottenham.

I think we're both right. Cooper/undertaker?
He buried 'em in barrels!

Hi All

Thank you all very much for your comments, yes i noticed that he was an undertaker and then a cooper on other documents..

Still not sure about the place where sarah was born, am beginning to think it is a spelling mistake of somewhere in Middlesex. If only I could find her baptism!

Thanks again
Angela
