I have just found my first 'born abroad' relation.

she was either born, according to census, in the USA, or to family folklore on board ship coming back to UK.

how do I try and find out further info please, I have no idea of the name of the ship, just a year of birth - 1885

There are births at sea on findmypast, 1854 to 1890, pay per view.

Hi Linda, what a generous offer- yes please!
she is Ethel Christine/a Hopper, dob 1885 (or was aged 30 at date of marriage in 1915 at least).

on a couple of census I have she was born in Ohio, but family legend says born on a boat! father Edward Hopper (as on m/cert)

many thanks, Carol

don't know where they are - still abroad maybe as Ethel is with family in Kent 1891 with William and and Annie Oliver as niece, and 1901 with Henry and Christina Hopper. This is the first time I have heard of Emily

thanks so much for your help everyone, I have got another generation back

thanks for that, not sure whether to try and find if she was born at sea (not sure how to do that yet) or try and find birth in USA - any tips folks? bit surprised to find this connection so not sure on how to look for emigrants. funny to find this now, as our youngest son emigrated last week and the eldest one lives abroad as well-must be in the blood.

I missed the emigration gene I think. thanks everyone for your help
