You could try Legacy on your laptop? They have a free or pay-for version.

They don't come much easier than FTM but every program is different, there are lots of programs that you can download and try free for a time limited period.

There's a free patch that you have to download and install to make 2005 run on Vista, you can download it here.

If you search this board using the window on the left of the forum message board screen, just type in family history software or program and you'll see dozens of previous posts on this very subject.

There's also a comparison chart that tells you what each program will and won't do, it's located here.

Thanks Sam, sounds easy enough, but I still do not know how to install the software onto vista, presumably it is not vista compatible?

I can't comment on a new tree programme as I use FTM 2006 and am more than happy with it.

However, once you have decided which program you want to use and have installed it onto your new laptop, it is easy to trf the data over.

On your FTM2005 you can choose to export your tree as a GEDCOM file, you need to save this onto a memory stick or a CD. You then open the new programme on the laptop, insert whatever you stored it on and you should be able to open the GEDCOM you have just saved.

Hi, can anyone give me some advice please as my computer knowledge is limited.

I have FTM 2005 installed on my windows XP PC.

I now have a lap top which uses vista. How can I transfer the information from my PC to my lap top?

I've never really liked the FTM program, it was recommended by PC World, but I find it difficult to use and was wondering if there were any better programes out there?

Would much appreciate some advice please.
