If you decide to buy Family Tree 2008 in New Zealand check the back of the box re free subscription before you buy. I'm in Canada and after I bought the programme realized that the free subscription was for Canada only. As I was only interested in a U.K. subscription I contacted Ancestry before opening the package and they agreed to give me a free U.K. subscription.

I also have downloaded Personal Ancestral File from FamilySearch.org which is a very good programme. Had I known about this programme before buying FamilyTree I probably would not have bought it. Although I am pleased to have the subscription to Ancestry - this turned out cheaper than buying the subscription in the usual way.

If you do decide on PAF and you have a tree on-line at Ancestry you can download that tree to your computer.

I also have PAF Companion from FamilySearch which gives you better options for printing your tree. This cost about $8 and was worth the money.

Sue mentioned PAF from Family Search, it is free as she said and a good start. we used it for a long time with good results and it is fully Gedcom compliant. there is very little to complain about but is not very good with photographs.
Family Historian is excellent, we had a demonstration at the local society and ordered a copy as soon as we got home. All our work on PAF was inported without a problem. You can get the program as a free download from the Family Historian web site but it will lock up after a month unless you buy a key on line. We believe it's the best there is for photographs and census returns.
Good luck whichever way you jump, Tony.

Thanks everyone!

The play dot come site looks good, thanks for that!

There is a FTM 2008, with 3 months free access to ancestry for 29.99 pounds - I'll look around the shops here (New Zealand) and see what the price is.
Thanks everyone, much appreciated.

Well, this question comes up almost daily :) If you enter something like family tree software into a search it should bring up dozens of threads for you to read.

Personally, to cut a long story short - FTM2006 - only £5.99 on play.com (the Who do you think you are version) with a months free sub to ancestry. Thats the synopsis of every thread on the subject ever I think :)

Enter a search and you can read them all at your leisure!

I use Family Tree Maker, it is very easy to use and has excellent help and support if you get stuck.

Before I go and spend my hard earned money (well, my husbands anyway) Can you all tell me which family tree programme you use and why?

I've no idea which one to get!
