All service records predating 1920 were transferred from the MOD to the National Archives at Kew, and are available for public viewing. If they survive, that's where they will be.

They are in WO (War Office) Collection 97, Soldiers discharge papers and pensions 1760-1913.

Could anyone tell me if it's possible to get service records and how? My Greatgrandad was in the Yorkshire Light Infrantry based in Tanshelf nr Pontefract Yorkshire in 1981.
