There are free census transcriptions at:
http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
The quality of the transcriptions is distinctly better than Ancestry's, but the coverage is not comprehensive, and varies a lot from county to county, and from year to year within a county. (For the county I was most interested in, there was 100% coverage and 75% coverage of two years only, but I found it very useful.) For coverage details, see:
http://www.freecen.org.uk/statistics.html

They all charge for census info except for the 1881 census which is free (on www.familysearch.org). Don't use GR credits, it is more expensive and not as good as the others. You need Ancestry ot Find My Past.

I am pretty new to all this - but with some very kind helpful people I have managed to get some way back with my tree. Can someone tell me, though, what is the best way to view census records on line? Do all sites charge as per GR, or is there a free site available that I can the same info from?

Thank you!
