Hi, can anyone tell me which software out there is most like the layout of the Ancestry family trees?

I am at present using Reunion on my Mac which is great (it should be it cost me £85 three years ago!)

On my laptop I am using the WDYTYA (FTM 2005) software, which is ok but not the most exciting.

I would really like a programme where when I look at the person view there is a photo looking back at me, unlike FTM where you have to go into the scrapbook. I love the layout on Ancestry with the timeline and being able to attach census reports etc, but I am very wary about putting too much info on there with it being online.

What are everyones thoughts??

I bought myself a copy of Create your own Family Tree yesterday. It was only £10 and althought I haven't used it properly yet, it seems to have more reports than WDYTYA. The only problem is it doesn't have the individual home page with a photo on (like Reunion) that I am looking for. I know that you get what you pay for, but I don't want to spend a lot and be disappointed (I didn't think £10 was too bad).

Has anyone got any suggestions?

There's another Mac program called Heredis (costs about £65), but I know nothing about it as I use Reunion. The software can be bought online from S & N Genealogy, so you should find some information about it there.

On Ancestry you have the option to have a private tree that is only viewable by people you invite to view so although it is online it is quite secure.

David - I also use Reunion on my Mac and think it is amazing, I would never change from that. However, it is for my pc laptop that I am looking for the new software.

Potty - I have my tree as private on Ancestry, but even so with the amount of data I would be putting on there such as mothers maiden name, date of birth, first school etc, I would be leaving myself wide open to identity fraud. I have no problems putting details on there for my rellies who are no longer with us.
I guess it is a case of whatever you feel most comfortable doing and I believe that anything you put on the internet could be looked at by a third party if they really wanted to (and had the know how!)

I have just ordered Legacy Deluxe 6 and although it is an American programme it seems to tick all my boxes (as is Reunion). Does anyone use this programme and if so what do they think??

According to my daughter's colleagues (she lives and works in the US) Legacy is really wild. Don't get alarmed though, that's their way of saying really good.

I'm sad I know but I am really excited and can't wait for it to arrive. I was looking on their website last night before I ordered it and it looks amazing. I just wish there was a UK edition because I think some of the functions may be pretty useless for this country.

I was hoping there may be someone in the UK using Legacy 6 who could give me their opinion.

That's great to hear. Do you find because of the research items being american that a lot of the facilities are useless or can you search for records in the UK aswell? Not that I am as bothered about that, as I subscribe to Ancestry and can always input information manually.

I have just downloaded the free [standard] version of Legacy because members have been saying how good it is.

Personally, I've had a go, and I'm not impressed - I have Family Tree Maker, and can find nothing in Legacy which would make me want to change from FTM. I find FTM to be very easy to use, and not complicated in any way, and I shall continue.
I appreciate other GR members may lean towards Legacy for other reasons.. The free version has many buttons which cannot be used - unless you purchase the full version of Legacy 6 - this is a shame, because you cannot use the full prog before you purchase.
I think a full version free 30 day trial use would have been more appropriate.

The answer to my question is most definately Legacy.

When the password finally arrived I got the free version up and running and now I can't wait for my version 7 to arrive.
