Yes a trooper is a army rank as in a private soldier , It goes back to the days of cavalry regiments, but in todays armies and it would be in WW11 it relates to soldiers serving in Armoured regiments ie Tanks etc.

In WWII was a Trooper a normal soldier? Have found this as an occupation on a wedding certificate 1941 London.
