Hi All

Does anyone know or have access to passenger lists of people who emigrated from England to Australia? I think my 4x great Grandfather may have emirgrated to Australia with 3 of his children after his wife died,Leaving behind in England his eldest daughter(my 3X Great Grandmother).

Samuel West Alabaster b1809 Kessingland Suffolk
Samuel Alabaster b1837 Bishopsgate London
Jane Alabaster b1839 Bishopsgate London
Martha Alabaster b1840 Bishopsgate London.

From what I have found out they seem to have first gone around about1840 - 1848 and then returned to England for a short while Before going back to Australia 1850/1851ish. Samuel West Alabaster,I believe died in New South Wales in 1869.

Hi Nicki, I noticed Samuel W Alabaster died age 61 in Sydney. (Reg.258/1869) You could ask 'Joy Murrin's Transcription Service' (on-line) to search the certificate -which would be much cheaper than buying it. (NSW BMD is on-line though couldn't see any marriage for Samuel.. Jane.... or Martha. The 'National Library of Australia' (also the 'NSW State Library') has an 'Ask a Librarian' service -they will check their records for you. I 'googled' 'Samuel Alabaster'...and noticed an 'Alabaster Society' showing your Samuel. Maybe some new clues there? .....Valerie

This is the first time Australia has cropped up in my Family history so was a little bit lost!

www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives is the site for immigrations to Sydney, but I cannot find Alabaster on it. It is hard to find people who paid their own way. DotK

Dont suppose anyone would be able to give an 'educated guess' as to why a widowed father would take 3 of his children to Australia and leave 1 behind?
Although she was the eldest she would still only have been about 7years old when they left.

Hi Nicki -just an 'educated guess' - maybe a helping relative (?) could just 'take' one - and maybe another lady 'nanny'(?!) went with the other 3 to Aus. .. .The State Library may have (all) their names upon arrival. ......... Valerie.

And a very big thank you for finding The Alabaster website! There is a huge amount of information on there. I thought I had found Mary Ann Alabaster(the child that was left behind) on the 1861 census living with a family of Kimptons/Kemptons in Shoreditch. The mother had married as an Alabaster. However since looking on the Alabaster website I see that her 1st marriage was to an Alabaster and she had a child of her own called Mary Ann,born at the same time!
All gets vey confusing!

Lots for me to research there.

Hi Nicki - just found this on NSW BMD: Jane Alabaster married John Oliver 1843. .... John & Jane A Oliver had 2 sons John (b1852/d1889 (age 38yrs at Redfern) and Louis C (1857). ....Confusing about this Jane marrying in1843 .. ...was she an 'aunt' I wonder and 'young Jane' given her name? Did Samuel want his sister(?) to help/have the chn? .....Valerie

Thanks,yes just looked at that,a relative to look after the children seems quite a possibility,I might have to purchase that marriage cert to see who Janes father was.Cant seem to find a marriage for either of the daughters though,i'l keep looking!

Hi Nicki - don't forget 'JOY MURRIN's Transcription Service (on-line) -she will 'search' the marriage cert for you -for a fee less than buying it. (give her the Reg.No.) .....Valerie

Your best bet would be to get Samuel's death cert, which should have his parents', wives and children's names (if they were known to the informant) so you can identify him positively.

I can't see him on any of the main passenger list sites.

I see somebody on Ancestry has Samuel in their tree (or is it you?)

Transcriptions contain exactly the same information as a certificate.
