How slow are the GRO?

Ian I think part of the problem may be different departments dealing with the births/marriages and deaths.
I ordered two certs on 11th April, the first arrived on 30 April, the second an overseas birth I am still waiting for. I rang the GRO and the admin officers (Paul) reaction was where was the birth? Canada says I, oh says he, we dont hold the info for them., will look into it for you. I must admit he emailed be back within about half an hour with the details that it had been dispatched the same day as the first cert (17th) and if I wished they would dispatch another to me free.
Yes please, so we will see if/when that arrives.

The inconsistency of arrival really gets me, you would think that certificates that are ordered at the same time would get despatched together rather than the often week or more apart

I would Sister B, but the register office I would need to use told me that family history requests take about three weeks.

Why don't you guys get them from the register office local to where your birth./marriage/death was???

The local reg office usually sends by return of post in my experience so I always try them first. And, you can email them with details and they'll look for you and will check they've got the correct cert before they send it, unlike the GRO which charges you even if it's the worng one and takes 2 weeks to send it anyway!!!
Support the local register offices is what I say!

They said that normal service would be resumed on 21 Apr! Now it's 12 May?
In the meantime all I want is my certificates!!! I've been waiting two weeks now and wanted to kick something when they didn't arrive this morning.

i ordered 5 on the 23st of April i had some by the end of that week and i got the last two yesterday. after i got tthe first three it was agonising waiting for the other two, which (as always the way) were the more important for my research.

No been waiting 2 weeks aswell

The problem is because I know they are taking along time I am looking ahead in my tree and ordering more certificates so they should be here when I am ready for them.

I wouldn't mind but they take your money straight aaway!!!

Seem to be waiting forever for certificates these days. It really slows down research when you have to wait 2 weeks or more for certificates each time.
I notice they are now saying on their website that they anticipate that full service will be resumed by week commencing 12 May, this date seems to keep moving as well.
Anyone noticed any improvement in these delays recently
