Hi everyone,

I recieved the following e mail from Ancestry the other day. Will I still be able to search while using my FTM without this backup service? I am a member of Ancestry.

"Your Family Tree Maker Internet backup service will expire on May 18, 2008. However, you may purchase another full year of service for only $9.95."

You can still search and merge details, that only stops if you don't suscribe to Ancestry.

The backup service makes an additional (online) backup copy of your file.

Assuming you make regular backup copies of your file to disc/stick then the onlne backup feature is another way of protecting yourself against data loss.

You do make regular backup copies don't you?

Hard drives, discs and sticks can fail over time and there are quite a few folks who have lost months of hard work. It isn't worth the risk of not making a copy on a regular basis (it takes a couple of minutes and saves hours and hours).

Online backup isn't automatic, you have to save your file to the service, do so at regular intervals, if you leave it too long and your hard drive fails then you will lose everything added in the interim period.

And yes, the answer is that for £10 it is well worth it but not a substitute for your hard drive and a few discs.

Hi Glen,

Thanks for that. A really clear explanation.

I will take your advise.
