i am looking for the most popular name there is - SMITH so i don't think the electoral roll would help but thank you for the suggestion Deb.

Kay, if you have the number that would be a great help.

You could try phoning the registry and having a chat with them. I don't know what good it will do, but it's worth a shot.

The law is a royal pain in the #@*&%^, but it does prevent identity theft.

The other alternative, if his name isn't a common one is to do an electrol roll search and write off to him. It worked for me. I was able to find my mother's brother that way.

so how do i go about obtaining an actual birth date - attending the actual registry with birth registered?? or is this a brick wall that won't disappear?

If the birth was in the last 50 years then you will need to provide birth date. There is a fifty year law in place to protect identity.

I've hit this brick wall in the past and contacted GRO and they explained to me about the law in place regarding birth certificates.

if you tick the box that says you have the GRO ref then you wont need any other info other than the name & the GRO ref

trying to trace half brother and managed to look through ancestry and found a possible name but to obtain full birth certificate on line it requires an actual birth date even though i have quoted GRO ref number and the quarter he was born.

Is there any other way of finding the actual date or obtaining a birth certificate.
