The transcription of the 1881 census is available free online. As for census before 1841 these were just head counts and contained no details of named individuals.

Please bear in mind that freebmd is an ongoing project, transcribed by volunteers. The years up to 1920 are something like 99%+ completed. There is always the chance that the odd record is missing but it should always be your first port of call.

Once you have found someone on there always click on the spectacles symbol to see the original image to confirm the details before ordering certificates.

Don't buy units on GR to look up census/bmd info.........it is the least economical way of doing it.

1881, as advised above, is free..............

Many bmd's are also free (1837 to c1920)............use the freebmd website..........google for link

Sandra, there are no generaly available county census before 1841 and certainly no national ones as 1841 was the first national census..
The 1881 census is available online, where have you looked? It is available on Ancestry, Findmypast etc.
It is available free on Familysearch.org.
