Printing Whole Tree

I use Rootsmagic and find it's good for how I like to keep information and display records. My problem is trying to print out the whole tree for family members who don't use computers much or who want to see the whole thing laid out before them. Although I've only gone back to about 1780 I've found, thanks to GR, lots of branches off the direct line so the tree covers 18 sheets of A4 printed portrait. I can join them by carefully slicing off the margins and sellotaping up but wondered if anyone had worked out an easier or more professional looking way of producing a printout?

Hi Maureen,

I was just about to post the same query. I only have my tree on Genes and have to print it off in sections and stick it together, which is not ideal.

Hope you dont mind my sharing your thread.

Hi Maureen and Ann,
I don't think on an ordinary printer that there is much more that you can do. Although I have heard good reports of a Ron on here from geneologyprinters.com once you have completed as far as you think you can go, which you might want to consider, but I don't know how much it costs and it doesn't help for what else you can do whilst still building your tree. Maybe someone else can suggest other solutions.

Hi Susan,

No it doesn't give all details. You just get it in tree form with names and dates of birth. In fact, when you come to think of it, its not much use in that form for future generations. All the paper work and stuff I have collected, will no doubt be thrown away and my computer work will go as well.

By googling, I've found Ron's site that Clare mentioned - prices from £5 to £40 with options to choose the info you want in the boxes.

This is the contact page on their website:

[edit - this isn't a recommendation, because I haven't used the service, but if I can get a summary print for a fiver, that's worth investigating!]

Hi all
Thought I'd just mention what I've done about my tree. It was a bit frustrating have pieces to stick together so I decided to do mine manually in book form. What I've done is break the family lines into separate chapters, adding photos ancestors, areas and streets where they lived, tombstones etc to make it more interesting. I've also included the family crests at the head of each chapter. All in all it makes a more interesting read and you can add all your collected info with each family member as well as add stories of interest.
Once I've completed my work I plan to have it printed and bound nicely and think this will make nice gifts for my siblings. Also having it saved on the pc you can always add information as it arrives.
Best regards

Thanks all.
It's good to know that it's not just me missing something obvious:-)
On Roots Magic I can choose how much info to have in the boxes but of course the bigger the box the more pages I need. All I really want is to be able to show the birth, marriage & death dates & places so that others in the family can see the links.
I'll investigate that site and see if it's what I want.
Once again GR friends come up trumps.

Any opinions on using Family Historian 3 ?
I want to get my information, that is only on GR into a report format, that I can share with family. A printed tree would be too big. I'm looking for ideas that would allow me to gedcom all the info I have in GR into a printable report, without having to do massive ammounts of retyping.
Thanks for any advice.

If you also have your completed tree on Ancestry.co.uk, you can have them produce a professional looking job of your tree in book or poster form for a reasonable cost.
