I didn't know about Ann but she fits.
Yes William Wier is the son and I'm OK from him onwards. There were a lot of Marshalls in Marylebone at that time but I haven't been able to establish a link.

My ancestor William Marshall appeared on an old family tree with no ancestors. It said he married in the USA c1778. I have found his daughter's birth registered in New York in 1782 and his son's in St. Marylebone, London in 1793 so he must have returned to the UK between those years. The ancestry site has a William Marshall arriving in New York at the right period and right age but says only that he came from Scotland. My only other clue is that they tended to use older maternal surnames as middle names and his son was christened William Wier Marshall. For several generations the firstborn son of William Marshall was named William, so my best guess is that a William Marshall married a Miss Wier, possibly in Scotland and their son William went to the States to seek his fortune. Does anyone have a clue where I go from here?
