Hello All,

This is my first post here & I have made quite a decent start to my tree. But I want to be able to construct my tree offline as well. I would like to be able to give to all my family DVD copies with attached photos & video & sound files where I have them. So what is the most flexible & powerful program I can use please?

A quick adjunct question how do I share my tree with my family online now is there a way I can do that?

One of the most often used is Family Tree Maker - several differents versions available.

IGI - Family Search - I believe does a free programme

If you’re a serious researcher and the records that you will be using are English, then look no further than “Family Historian”

Thing is, your family would in most cases have to download a gedcom program to their computer to view your cds that you made from your program. They could download the free PAF from familysearch.org.

In the meantime, if you buy the extremely good value at the moment Family Treemaker Who do you think you are version program from play.com for £5.99 you will get 14 days free ancestry sub with it and yes, you can use it to produce your own home page on the internet just by clicking a few buttons. It will make your info into a sort of book form which anyone in the world with a puter and internet can view. You can password restrict it or allow everyone to see it and find it through google. And yes you can add photos, video and sound clips, create trees, time lines etc.

If you are just starting, read the tips for newbies and all related threads on here - it will save you an awful lot of time and money.

Everybody has a personal preference about what to use, so, I would recommend downloading trial versions of all the major family tree sofware packages so that you can try them yourself before commiting to any particular one.
The one I use and recommend after many years of family research is RootsMagic - and I've tried them all. Powerful yet simple it can do everything you require, including burning read-only CD's of your data to send to friends and family, plus automatically building webpages for a website.

Thats probably a good idea Matthew, Ive only ever used FTM.

Oh the other thing Lacanox though - you can always upload any gedcom to the ancestry world tree - either as a public or private one. Ive had some very good contacts from that recently.

I did download the free one called PAF but I'm finding it frustrating because you dan't appear to view all siblings on it together like you can on here.

Just to say that I agree with Ken - I have tried several programmes, but I do like Family Historian and that is the one I use now. It is easy to use and to customise, and the reports are good.

I have downloaded the trial version of Legacy Charting, as I like the pretty charts you can create and it works well as an add-on.

Family Tree Maker can save all reports and family trees as a PDF file, no need for the recipient to have a tree program to view the trees you can send in PDF format as attachments.
