Perhaps Alfred was a rogue, but instinct tells me the change of name has something to do with the possible "shotgun" wedding and the child dying so no need to hang around. My grandad died when he was 98, and was 81 when I was born.We lived with him until he died and all that time he was a "softie". amazing thst he has this colourful past!!!

Although her name on the birth cert is Caroline, perhaps she was Rosa and just used the Caroline. I will check for that. Also I have just recieved the birth cert for the possible child and it is indeed the child of my grandfather and Caroline. The address on it is different from the marriage cert and is 40 Nicholas street, the same as given for Caroline in 1901 census. Many thanks for all advice and input. I will get to the bottom of this, even if it kills me!!!!

My late father in law's father married his mother under a different name to what it really was. Then went on to marry another woman under his real name.
but the marriage to his first wife was the legal one, and years after he died, his first wife got the widows pension, and the second wife nothing, as she was his bigamist wife.

Maybe Alfred was a rougue or had a Police record.....so changed his name so he could join up?

Yes that is her in 1891. Her father was a printer. In 1901 they were living at 40 Nicholas street, Hoxton, Shoredtich. she was a cigar maker, same as my grandfather.
At the time of their marriage in 1904 they were both 20.
I am trying to find out why my grandfather changed his second name to Taylor when he joined the army. He even got married in India using the name Taylor. He only appeared to change back to Rudman when he returned to England, having split up from his second wife, who we always thought was his first!!. I think he left Caroline, hense the name change. As I said I can,t find anything on Caroline after their marriage.Any advice will be great. Many thanks

It was usual practis to move to the same parish just before the marriage as then they only paid for the banns to be read once.

Hi what would be the best way of seeing who occupied a certain address in 1901?. My grandfather and family, Alfred Rudman, lived at 101 Weymouth terrace, Haggerston. In 1904 he married a Caroline White and the address on the cert is 117 Weymouth terrace. I am wondering if they moved in with a relative as I think it was a shotgun wedding as a child was born four months later. I am trying to find out what happened to Caroline as the child died 18 months later and my grandfather joined the army a month later under the name Taylor. I cant find any other entries for Caroline so I am hoping that if they lived with somebody this may give a lead. I dont think it was her parents as they are under a different address in 1901, although of course they could have moved. Hope this is not too long winded or confusing, appologies if it is!!!!. Many thanks
Karen
