Legal adoption did not come into force until the late 1920's, so, unless he was at least 11/12 when adopted, there will not be any documents with the info you need.

Check out Bernice's thread about adoption, etc..........she's a mine of info, and incredibly helpful...........

Can anyone tell me how to trace the surname of a relative prior to adoption.

MY GGrandfather, born 1916 was adopted and changed his name to the adoptive family.

Would there be records of his "real" name?

I don't know when he was adopted, but apparently, not at birth he was a child, and fostered first then adopted by the same family.
