I just got a birth cert for my 3*g grandad, Isaac Jones.born 1861. His parents were Evan and Mary Jones (formerly Jones).

I have details of them on the 1861/71 census
living in Dolgelley, Merionethshire. Evan was turnkey and then warder of the county gaol.

On looking for a marriage for them between 1841-51 I find 3 possibles.

I don't have any knowledge of them before 1861 so can't use fathers names as a reference check when ordering a marriage cert.

Any tips on narrowing it down so I can order the right marriage cert?

Sorry - not strictly true that I know nothing of them before 1861.

I know from the 1861 that they had a son called Evan abt 1852, William abt 1855 and a daughter Mary abt 1857.

have you searched for the other children after their birth dates .........may lead to grand parent living with them ...

I've tried but with Evan, William and Mary Jones it's hard to know when you're on the right track as there are so many of them.

How old are Evan and Mary on the 1861? Birthplaces? To help find them on the 1851...

On the 1871 census it has

Evan Jones 48 (1823) warder Dolgelley,
Mary Jones 53 (1818) warders wife, Llangryn,
Mary Jones, 14 (1857) Dolgelley
Isaac Jones 10 (1861) Dolgelley.

On Isaacs birth cert the residence is Tainewyddion, Dolgelly.

EDIT - on the 1861 Mary Jones is 45 (1816) so she'd shaved a couple of years off by 1871 - and who can blame her!?

just thinking, if we find them 1851 you can see if they had any other kids before Evan(1852) and guesstimate a marriage....else...given ages, could ahve married 1840ish??

Evan would've been 18 in 1841 (if his birth year of 1823 is correct).

The first child i know of is Evan jnr in 1852.

The marriages i found on freebmd were 1849, 1851 and 1844 i think so it could be any of those.

That does look promising! So William and Ellen are Mary's parents?
Does it give an occupation for Evan? And an address?

parents, yes, William Agricultural Labourer (in full,there's posh- all mine just get Ag Lab!)
Evan- State quarryman (??)
Address "Wern"

William born 'Mallwyd'
Mother born 'Llanfihanger'....handwriting plus my welsh knowledge not good!

So it seems they were defo married before 1851 - so that counts out the 1851 marriage entry.

Down to two now and that should be fine with the new info.

Yeah, you're right. The 1851 one is Mar 1851 so it could still be them!
I'll go for the 1849 one and see what it brings.
