thanks Kate
Think I might have to track the church records down.

The other way you could try it - if you can get there - is to go to the local records office for the place you're after and go through the church records to look for baptisms and marriages. I've found 3 extra siblings of my great-grandma (to give just one example) by going through the baptism records in the local church.

These children died between censuses so - although I could have located deaths for children of the right names in the indexes I wouldn't have known they were my family without finding those christenings.

Also, marriages can be useful if you can find the original records - you get father's names and sometimes the witnesses will be siblings of the couple getting married.

You can look on www.freebmd.org for bmd's, but they are only transcribed up to about 1920, depending on the area. Other than that you need a pay to view site and even then it is difficult as you have to trawl through the images quarter by quarter.
When I was looking for Ethels birth, there were about four Ethel Taylors born in Dewsbury within a few years of each other. So even if you find a marriage, without buying all the certs at £7 a go, you are not going to be able to tell which one is her.
For parish records read the info on the IGI which is always at the very top of this Tips board.

The 1881 census is free on

Thanks Linda for the information Is there anywhere on the web where I can access info without signing up for anything.
As I also want to find if Ethel married.
Thanks for your time
