Mitchell or Matilda ?

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

I have a copy of the marriage certificate for my g/mother.

In the 'main body' of the cert her name and surname are Edith MITCHELL Doyle but in the 'signature' box it is Edith MATILDA Doyle.

The marriage was at The Register Office, Shoreditch, London in 1923.

So, my question is, how/where do I locate her correct name, Mitchell or Matilda?

Many Thanks

Pauline

Hi Pauline,
Have you looked for her birth on Free BMD?

Yes I have Ber.

She was born 17th August 1892. Doyle is her married name. She was a widow. She was born Edith Blackmore( so I have been told), probably Shoredith, Hoxton area.

I have never been able to trace her birth registration though but with this extra info on the mc, I just thought that it might help me in my search.

Thanks
Pauline

Pauline,

It should list her maiden name on the marriage cert.

Hi Rose

No maiden name, I'm afraid.

Condition 'widow'

Father's name 'Edward Blackmore ( deceased) Engineers Labourer'

I have been searching for years( on and off) to find a birth registration for my g/mother. I just thought that this Mitchell/Matilda could be another path for me to follow.

There is a marriage for James Doyle & Edith Blackmore in Holborn 1914 - I'm waiting for this cert to come. It's a possible.

Thanks for your time

Any middle name listed for her death?

No, there wasn't Rose - not even an initial.

I've only recently found her 1923 mc and I was very surprised to see the name Doyle and a middle name come to that.

I had never heard any of these names in the family before.Neither had my mum ( her daughter). I find it all very strange.

Do you think that I would need to go to Shoreditch Register Office and look at the original records?

Thanks
Pauline

Not sure if this helps with anything?

BIRTH Jun 1867
Edith Mitchell Blackmore, Poplar, 1c 669

A distant relation perhaps? possibly an Aunt who your Edith could be named after.

Also theres this entry in 1901
Edith Blackmore 1892 born in Clapham,London living in Battersea London

(Sorry my London geography is very poor so I don't know if it fits or not)

Also the parents seem to be Thomas & Emma, so it looks unlikley

Thanks Louise

I hadn't seen the 1867 birth entry. I'll certainly follow that one up.

Yes, the 1901 entry has father, Thomas and I expected my g/m to be 8 years old and not nine.(maybe I'm being a bit too picky here)!!

Battersea and Clapham are close enough though.

Thanks for your help

Yes Von - I was thinking along those lines as well.

Do you know the best way for me to contact Hackney as I can't go in person? (I'm a few thousand miles away)!

Would an e-mail suffice?

Thanks for your time

I have 'googled' Hackney Register office and their site gives a telephone number for enquiries, so I will call them to-morrow.

Perhaps if they can't help me they should know who can.

Thank you all once again.
