Hi Sue,

Straw plaiter's made things like hats, baskets etc.

As Glitter Baby pointed out, in 1871 she was unmarried. Though being an unmarried mother wasn't particularly popular, it wasn't unheard of. My 5 x Gt Grandmother had two children out of wedlock and on my ex-husbands side, his grandad was illegitimate, his mother before him was illegitimate and HER mother was illegitimate too!!

Best wishes
Heidi

Ps It's Castle Hedingham by the way! ;o)

Please could someone take alook at the 1871 census
Emily Fletcher (name is mis trans as Emely)
birth 1841 castle hedington essex.
Daughter in law
Can you tell me what it reads under her married status.

The reason I would like to know is she never married but had 3 children which lived with her. Would that not have been looked down on in that era.

She is only listed as daughter in law as her mum remarried and her husband filled out the census with his relationship to her.

Also could you tell me who a straw plaiter would work for.

Thanks sue
