Thank you for your replies.
Linda - I guess it's a possibility.
I have located a Benjamin & Sarah Hipwell in Rugby on the 1841/1851 censuses. Benjamin was born in Catthorpe c.1809 so it makes me wonder if he could be an uncle to to my g g grandfather.
As the above couples' son - Benjamin was only 3 yrs in 1851, the baptism you have found can't be for him. Mmm worth thinking about.
Alan - Thankyou for those tips. As Catthorpe is a tiny village with only one church I assumed they would be CofE, but of course they may have travelled to the nearest town for baptisms in to a different religion.
Warwick R.O. is definately beckoning.

Being a bit longer in the tooth than some well relate my experiences.
1 anyone could get baptised/christened, not necessarily were you were born
2 you needed to get married in a church and there were baptism certificates if not baptised into the faith of the church you took lessons.
please remember minority religions like quakers so perhaps you are looking at the wrong church. not everyone is high church of england

I've got one ancestor being baptised the same day he was married.

Thank you very much for your replies -
Kay - they were married in the brides parish and I think a trip to Warwick Records Office is definately on the cards to check if he was baptised just prior to marriage. I have come across that birth in 1832 but also found burial for same on 2nd May 1832.
Jill - I have come across a similar situation in my search - There were four children of one particular family all baptised on the same day the eldest being 16 years !
once again thanks for your suggestions

One of my lot - a family of 8 children - had all (bar one) baptised on the same day - the eldest was 17 and the youngest about 2.

Takes all sorts ...

Have you checked just prior to his marriage....?if the local vicar saw it as a requirement..he could have insisted that he be baptized,,,,,,or if the bride was local and was known by the church it probally wasnt asked if he had been,,but at least 80%were done as infant for fear of them dying by the parents and not being buried in consecrated ground ,!
Maybe the record didnt survive,,,,

Try Bishop Transcripts which will be held at the local Archive or Record Office,,,,,,,,,these were are of transcribed by parish clerk into the Register destin for the local Bishops records,,,,,,,,these were kept at the main parish church so have survived,,,,,,,,

PS,,,Dates on christing/bapt doesnt mean an exact date of birth only when the event took place..........which can be days/weeks after birth or possibly few years,,,,,,,,

Please does anyone know if it was a requirement that you had been baptised/christened before you were allowed to marry in church?
The marriage took place in Rugby 1846 and it was my g g grand father (Benjamin Hipwell).
He has been consistent with his place of birth - Catthorpe Leics c.1825 on all the censuses and on both his marriage certs naming his father as William.
I have checked the parish records for Catthorpe & neighbouring villages & the IGI.
If it was a requirement then I know that there is more searching to be done, if not I'll have to accept that I won't get any further back or find who his siblings were. (On the 1841 census he was with a John Crow in a neighbouring village and I have also checked the parish records for that village.)
I apologise if this question has been asked before - I have done a search on the tips board but haven't found an answer.
Can someone put me out of my misery please?
