Hi all
Just wanted to share this. Having not looked at ancestry for a while, I had a dip into the military service records for WWI that seem to have appeared. I was pleasantly surprised to find my grandfather there but couldn't believe it when I came across a letter from my great grandfather asking the powers that be to let him know my grandfather was still alive, as he'd had no word since he landed in Egypt.
This was in his own hand and dated 90 years ago. I admit I did shed a tear,
Chris

What a wonderful find, Chris! Wish I could get so lucky.

Apparently Ancestry are adding WW1 service records, slowly but surely, in alphabetical order for the records that survived the WW2 blitz....I think that I have it correct!

I know how you feel Chris....I found my gt grandfather's a couple of weeks ago and I too shed a tear especially when it listed his 10 surviving children he was leaving behind, my granddad being the eldest. Thank goodness my gt grandfather survived.

It was a surprise to find that he served with the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers.... seeing that we come from Cheshire!! They arrived in France in1916.

Know how you feel Chris. I have just helped a friend find her Grandfathers records. We have uncovered hand written letters from him and his wife also a description on him when he enlisted. Happy we are as have no photos of him. He was in The Australian Forces in France.1916-1918.

Cheers

No Chris, its on ancestry.co.uk - do you have a sub already? Then just go there and look at all the records you can see, theres lots more than just the census and bmd.

sadly, all mine were navy in WW1 so nothing on the war records for me yet.

I can’t wait for mine to be on there! The surnames only go up to about G or H at the minute and all my main surnames start from K!

The pension records are complete (for those that survived). It is the service records which are still being update. Although they are called pension records, not all of the men received a pension. My uncle is on there and he was medically discharged within a few weeks with no pension. He was short sighted - wonder how they missed that in the medical!
