I have found someone whose birth is registered twice in the same qtr under 2 different surnames. Its definately the same person as the forenames, qtr, district and volume ref & page are the same for both entres. My feeling its something to do with questionable paternity, is this what everyone else feels ? Any other ideas ?
Thanks
Susan

Is this a recent birth? If so then it points to the parents not being married therefore child is listed under both Mum's & Dad's surnames

depending on what year it is. It could be as you say when the birth was registered it was done under the fathers surname, but then the father denied anything to do with the child and so insisted his name be removed in which case it was then possibly changed to the mother's maiden name.

Do you know what the mother's maiden name was?

It happens when a child is illegitmate but the father attended the registration and he is on the birth cert as the father. its only one registration but the entries are listed twice under both surnames.Means that whichever name the cert is ordered in then the same cert will get sent.
My grandson has such an entry for his daughter cos he wasnt married to the mum.

Thanks All...
The birth was registered in the last 1960's. The mothers maiden name is the same on both entries and is correct.
Take it then that the birth was registered under her husband's surname (who she had married in 1965 and then divorced). But her told her to get it changed to the true fathers surname which was the chap she later married in 1972.
Oh what a tangled we we weave !
Thanks again think I've got it now....

There could be a third registration in the true dad's name sometime after 1972

she would be entitled to reg the birth in her current name ie her married name cos that was who she was at the time. She must have been honest and reg the true dads name at the time so that why it has the same reg nos.
