Stacy, think twice before getting FTM 2008 as it is very slow using it with Windows Vista.

I use Legacy Version 6 and it has a free version Standard(some features are not activated) but the deluxe version is around $40.00 US.

I find either RootsMagic V 3 to be very good also.

Have 12 genealogy programs on my Vista machine and Legacy is my first usage program and then I have The Master Genealogist for my master save program. but that is not needed

Best regards,
Harold

I use FTM 2006. I tried the 2008 version but didn't like it one little bit so quickly went back to 2006 which I find really great software

Hello all.
Stacy, I have been using a free program called Legacy which you download from www.legacyfamilytree.com/. I have been using it for years and find it much better than any thing else. Try it or at least take a look at it.
I have Vista on my computer and have no problem.

Stacey, if you can get an earlier version of FTM (2006 version?) there is a patch to download to enable it to run on Vista, just done it myself.

Family Tree Maker, most people use that one on here. Have tried others but always seem to come back to FTM.

Dont think FTM 2008 comes very recommended though as it seemed to have changed the layout etc.,, a lot of people have 2005/2006 version.

The majority of people on this site use one of the versions of Family Tree Maker (any of them apart from the 2008 newest version which most people don't seem to like). I have FTM2005 and find it ideal for what I want but there is free software that you can download if you don't want to pay.
