Thanks alice. Its could be him. Robert is a common family name used in many generations. Not sure how to prove it though one way or the other

Ok, so once the marriage cert arrives, it should help you locate the right family on the earlier census records. It would just be guesswork otherwise, knowing that there were at least 3 lads of the same name born around the same time in the same county.

Let us know if you need any help once the cert arrives.

I've ordered the certificate but it hasn't arrived yet.

Yes, that's him. Any idea where he was prior to 1871?

Sue

I can see 3 birth entries for that name for circa that year:

Roger Howarth 1843 Jan-Feb-Mar Manchester (1837-1924) Lancashire

Roger Howarth 1843 Jul-Aug-Sep Bolton Greater Manchester, Lancashire

Roger Howarth 1844 Jul-Aug-Sep Bury Greater Manchester, Lancashire

On his marriage cert what does it say his father's name is and both their occupations?

I'm fairly new to this game and I need help please.

I have Roger Howarth born 1843, living in Manchester in the 1871 census, moving to Sheffield by the time the 1881 census took place. I have a marriage and a death but no idea where he was before 1871. There is a possible birth entry in 1843 but the birth entry just says Roger born Manchester so it may not be his. There's no sign of him in the 1861 or 1851 census. Does anybody have any idea how I can find out more?
