Joe,

You won't get certificates for before 1837; you will only find the references in the parish records. Have you tried the IGI?

What place names are you looking for? Some places that are now in Cumbria(which didn't exist then, being made up of what was Cumberland, Westmorland and parts of Lancashire) were in Lancashire for that period and there is an online parish clerk (www.lan-opc.org.uk/).

GJ,

There is no BDM index pre 1837 when civil registration was passed,,,,Parish registers will be your option, and these dont carry any references,

Kendal is in Cumbria,,,,,,,not far from Windemere.

Have you tried --IGI,,@ FamilySearch.org.....its not fool proof or should be taken a a true fact/and all information found on there must be validated with original. PR entry but may give you something to work on,

Gypsy Joe, Kendal is in the lake district, north west of the country.

You will find parish records at Kendal Record Office for this area, if you cant get there try emailing them or phoning them up with details, they are very helpful there and can maybe set you on the right track, I have been myself.

There are a few available on the internet but not sure which, if you google genuki/westmorland or genuki and your area you may find some.

How do I ...find and get references and certificates for BDM prior to 1837?

Will I need to go to the parish I believe the person was born in?

Are any parishes contactable via the internet so I can apply for a search or would I need to do that myself?

The area I'm looking at is Cumbria/ West Moreland

Thanks
