I was wondering if anyone knew if Army marriages are registered separately from general marriages as I can't find my grandparents marriage.

Thanks

If they married in this country no - I found my grandfather's marriage here.

If they married abroad then there should be a record of the marriage somewhere here - not 100% sure how that works but someone will know for sure.

Hi Alice

Thanks for the offer I really appreciate it.

My grandparents were Gwilym Davies & Bridget Sullivan.

My mum was born in 1929 & Bridget died in 1936 age 41.

Thanks again

No problem Alice, thanks for having a go anyway, I think I'm just destined not to find it.

Cheers

Lorraine

I am wondering if this could be a 2nd marriage for her? From the age of death given she would have been born c1895 and therefore aged 34 when your mother was born. Not impossible I know, but seems rather late for a 1st marriage?

I wondered the same thing Mary, but I haven't even come across a marriage for a Gwilym Davies to any Bridget's so no luck there. I don't know if there were any older children either but there was talk of a possible older brother.
Thanks for your input I appreciate it.

Do you have any other info on Gwilym at all, such as his occupation as shown on your mother's birth cert? Just wondering if perhaps he was in the army and stationed in Ireland at some time?......Bridget Sullivan is a very Irish name.

The occupation on my mothers birth cert looks like Casual Labourer ..... so looks like I've drawn another blank on that.

There are several Bridget Sullivan's born in Merthyr Tydfil (which is where she died) who were born around 1895 so one of them could be her I suppose so that doesn't help either.

I have nothing else about Gwilym other than he was living at 98 Bridge Street Merthyr when she died.

Thanks again Mary

Barring oversight - Cannot trace a marriage Davies/Sullivan 1912-1936.
Suggest that you try to find brothers/sisters of your mother and determine who was the firstborn maybe that will give you a start point for another look for the marriage. IF it appears to be a late start marriage then perhaps there was a previous husband for Bridget and she remarried in her previous married name - some did, some didn't - OR check out all the marriages of Gwilym against various Bridgets until you fin one that 'clicks' maybe in M T.

Hi Joe thanks for your suggestions unfortunately I couldn't find any marriages of a Gwilym marrying a Bridget so its back to the drawing board for me again I'm afraid.

Also I haven't found any births for siblings of my mother other than her twin sister.

Thanks for your help & everyone elses who replied.

If you cannot find a marriage for Gwilym, I wonder if the Army anglicised his name to William?

You could try Davis. Some of my Davies relatives are listed as Davis.
