Whist I agree that Hot Matche can be annoying, I can also understand GenesReU reasoning.

I have seen so many trees that dont have full place of births/deaths/marriages. Sometimes they just give only the village/town, sometimes just the county, and more often than not, they dont give the country.

Sometimes I think it is because they get fed up with typing in the same information over and over again - they become slapdash, for want of another word. And because they know where the place is, they dont stop and think that others do not - or how important such info is in searches and making connections.

This is why I always strongly recommend getting a tree program - as such info is stored and automatically completes when starting to type in an address etc.

And yes, GenesReU could learn a great deal from other genealogy sites - but do they really care? As long as they get members subscriptions and hefty advertising fees?

Hi Patricia and Petrina, I do understand the difficulties they have, but your Idea Petrina is a good one perhaps you could contact them and suggest it.

If more of us contacted them to complain about their system then eventually they would think of another way. I often have anything upto 28 pages to trawl through and it's so time consuming just to eliminate about 98 or 99% of them. Thanks again girls for responding. Take care, Lou

If they used a drop down list for counties as in Ancestry it would work better. Surely they can learn from other better site technology.

I have deleted my William Smith from my tree after finding that every 7 pages of Hot Matches contained 5 pages of William Smiths, none of whom were a match. The place of birth would have eliminated them, even if they "matched" only the county. But can see that different presentation of the location could cause problems. Perhaps GR could introduce a standard way of entering locations.

Hi Everyone, Getting fed up with Hot Matches not matching I contacted Genes and asked why they don't match Country's too and this is their reply.

"At the moment we just match the name and year of birth. However, we may make changes to the way system works in the future and add in the place of birth as a match. The problem is that members add the place in different way, or it can be mis-spelt. Some might add the town, others the full address. This makes it difficult to match. By keeping the search broad we feel you have a greater chance of a match. However, I have made a note of your suggestion and will pass it on to our development team.

If we all contacted them and suggested the same they just might change the way their Hot Matches work and thus cut down on the amount of Hot Matches which are obviously not matched.

Just wondered what you all think? Lou
