Yes, that's what I did, Devon Dweller. I was actually trying to work out how to get the discount so I logged into Ancestry to try to find it and never did, but I renewed while I was on there.

Even if your subs are about to run out you should never click on an e-mail link...you'd be better off logging into the site and be safe in the knowledge that no one else will get your details

Well, I got an e-mail like that two days before my last subscription ran out but I knew it was coming to the date when it would run out and because I'm on automatic renewal it had tried to do it but couldn't because I have changed banks since last year so my old details can't be used any more.

If you have changed banks or something, I could understand it, but if not I would be suspicious. The e-mail I got said that, as it could not renew my details my account would be closed in two days unless I updated.

Yes, they can be quite sneaky - sometimes its totally different with a name and hotmail or something but as mgnv says, sometimes they have been more inventive and will have a similar sounding email address.

Sylvia,

Your advice is mostly correct, but the email address might not be VERY different - it might well be something close like (I'm making this up) http://ancestery.co.ru

Blimey, I didnt expect scammers to jump onto ancestry but I guess they will work out every possible fraud they can.
You can always ring them on the freefone number - they are usually very helpful.

Wow Sylvia, how did you think to do that? Will give it a try.

when you get a message like that, hold your mouse pointer over the email address they give ...... don't click on it ............ but wait a few seconds, and a bar should appear giving the email address.

If it's a scam, what shows in the bar is very different from the the one that you are holding your pointer over. Delete immediately without opening.

works for all that kind of email ....... banks, lotteries, etc etc

I get a lot of emails like that saying they are from ebay or paypal, they NEVER are. Just someone trying to get my account details. I too send them on to the companies and get a reply with in the hour usually.

This may have been mentioned recently but I´ve been off line with PC probs. so have missed everything. I have received an email today from Ancestry asking me to send them details of my credit
card. They say that I need to respond within 2 days or they will close my account. I have no intention of sending this info by email. Does anyone know about this? (I have sent an email to their fraudprevention address)
