Thanks Dianne

My problem is when i went to the records place in Edinburgh half of those children were listed with the fathers name William.

How do you work out which entry is correct?

At that time would there not have been more than 4 children? the next generation down had 13/14 kids.

thanks again

They could well have had more children who were stillborn or miscarried.

Or maybe the wife was poorly and couldn't have any more children.............lots of reasons for smaller families.

Hi Karen,
You have to take accents into account. Often the minister was from a totally different part of the country and the local accent would have been like a foreign language to him!
I can easily see 'Summerfield', with a broad, long Avon accent sounding like 'Semple'!

Sorry, SOMMERVILLE! Actually that's the same as 'Summerfield' in lots of dialects!
