Sandra

It sounds like you may have the Exact Matches box ticked at the top of your search box in Ancestry? if you uncheck that, similar sounding names will come up in your Census searches and you can pick people out whose names have been transcribed wrongly.

Yes a former marriage looks possible, but I cant find a marriage for Henry nearer to 1881, if you have access to the 1871 I would look up the ingram children and see who their parents are....

Nicky

Clare you must have been posting the same time as me , should have thought to look for Kitney again....

Looks like the Ingram's may be Mary's children & William Henry's child by Eliza

This looks like Henrys marriage. The bride wasn`t listed.

Sandra, after years of doing family history, you gain a great imagination.

I found yours by putting in his first name, Sidney, but leaving the surname blank.
I also put in year of birth 1880 +/-2 and his birthplace.

Then trawl through the results for a name that resembled the one I was looking for.

Depends how unusual the names are really. Try searching on just the christian name, year of birth +/- 2 and the area. Or the same for the surname. Sometimes less info gets you better results, especially if one or both of the names has been mistranscribed.

Who are you looking for, when and where?

i have got my ggm's birth certificate today so am armed with correct info on her parents etc...

i've had some success locating her father on the 1901 census and the 1891 ... (therefore finding his parents names)

i found his marriage in 1903

but i can't find them previous to 1891 (i'm using ancestry)

any advice or tips ?

even though im filling in as much info as i know on the search... it keeps telling me "we cant find an exact match.. these might help"

but they don't
