After reading some parts of a census what do the following abreviations mean
1. Own A/C or Own account, (Self Employed??)
2. Hind (in the working at home column)
3. What looks like a tick in the last column (deaf/blind/idiot) this might be just a mark to say where he was upto i don't know.

Own account I take to mean they had an income of some sort, but not through working. Maybe an allowance or income from shares.

Right i think i solved the tick! It seems all persons in the pages following and prior not from Lancashire have a tick. WHY?

Own account means they were working for themselves.

Hind is a farm labourer (usually working with animals)

A tick in the last column could mean the person had a disability, or it could mean that they were not born in the county they were living in at the time, or as you say, just were the enumerator put marks when he was transfering data to other forms.

If a person had an income from somewhere other than working it usually says Living on Own Means.

On the one i have Hind in the working at home column, could this have anything to do with the lady having a 2 week old child. Hence a nursing mother? The pen used looks fainter than the rest of the forms writing, so it could have been added later.

Thank you for helping me out, making sense of things.
