can anyone advise my friends half brother was registered at birth under his mothers surname as his parents werent married.
however there are two registration details for him with the same ref etc, and he is also reg under his fathers surname.
I assume this is only possible if the father is present, why would he be reg twice is it parental choice or required legally thanks

HI,
My middle daughter has 3 enteries on the birth register.
1st when she was born.
2nd Not sure why.
3rd We had her re-registered when my son was born as we were told he was hier to everything we had as we were married when he was born, but not when she was born.
This is as far as i am aware legal as the registrar told us to do it.
I suppose it is a parental choice but knowing if anything happened to us he would legally get everything and she wouldn't wasn't fair.
Hope this helps.
Chell

When a child is illgitimate and the father aknowledges the birth and attends the regisration then the GRO record shows the child with each surname. no matter which surname you use when ordering, the GRO ref is the same & you will get the one cert which shows both the parents names.
I have a Grt grandchild whose parents werent married and thats how the GRo record shows cos grandson attended the registration and he is down as the father

It is parental choice if the parents are not married. The father would have had to be present to have his name registered as the father unless he signed a written statement which the mother agreed to.

It was a law registration requirement if the couple were not married, that the child birth registration is entered in both surnames,,

The law still do of enter a child in both surnames if the couple arent married,

The mother doesn't have to name the father of a child, so some children are only registered under the mother's maiden name if she is not married.

Hi Kay,

You are correct that a birth is registered in both parents surnames, I had my doubt's about that one but I have checked my daughters and it is true.

So much for me deciding she would not be registered in my married name when I didn't want to be found, it's there for the whole country to see.

I am so glad she is now grown up and it doesn't matter anymore.

Thank you.

Kind regards
Amanda x
