It depends on the severity of the case I'd presume. I found an article which mentioned my greatx2 grandfather because he'd was a witness at trial of a child murderer in Liverpool
& another mention another ancestor because he apprehended a robber

I've just had a quick look and can't see anything that seems to relate at the moment

The inquest would have been held locally so may be in the local newspaper at the time.

My gr grandfather committed suicide in 1897 in Southwark. There was nothing at all in any of the local papers but I eventually tracked down a report of the inquest in Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper - I think the paper was a bit like the old Titbits magazine - anything that was slightly scandalous or gossipy was reported and it did not focus just on London - so if you have the date of the inquest from his death cert and you cannot find anything locally then try the Lloyd's one.

Louise, would this have made national news? and do you know how to search the Times online?

Heather, would this type of trial been held locally (Peterborough) or maybe the Old Bailey?

Their names were William and Sarah Dewberry.

This was my Great Grandmother and Father. I have confirmed it with the Northamptonshire archivist and am waiting for information from the Peterborough newspaper at the time. The chidren were split up. My nan was sent into service at the age of 10. My mum never knew my nan had brothers and sisters.

My Nan was a lovely lady, very kind and not at all bitter. I can only guess she was determined to give her children better.

I am trying to establish what might have been regarded as cruelty to children in 1903.

Whatever it was it was sufficient for my ancestor to committ suicide over it (on the morning of the trial) and his wife pleaded guilty and was given 6 months hard labour!!

He was found hanging by his 14 year-old son, who cut him down and then he sought help. This doesn't seem the kind of thing a child who was being treated badly would do...
